CORUM participates in the Vendée Globe 2020 with skipper Nicolas Troussel

CORUM in the Vendée Globe

Nicolas Troussel, the French skipper, sponsored by CORUM Investments, has qualified for the Vendée Globe 2020, one of the world’s most prestigious sailing events, starting on 8 November in the French town of Les Sables-d’Olonne.

The Vendée Globe is the only single-handed (solo) non-stop round the world yacht race, sailed without any assistance and often compared in difficulty to the ascent of Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world. In total, the race is over 40,000 kilometres, the equivalent of the circumference of the earth, where skippers sail in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans until they return to their starting point.

The Vendée Globe is the only solo sailing race in which skippers sail around the world without any external help. The Vendée Globe is considered to be an extremely challenging race in which skippers and their boats must endure wind, cold and hardship for two months.

Skipper Nicolas Troussel will be preparing both physically and mentally for the race in the coming months, with the support of his team consisting of 14 people providing technical, sports and administrative capabilities. The adaptation to navigability of the new CORUM L’Épargne, equipped with the most advanced technological innovations, is a challenge where no detail can be left to chance. In order to understand the level of effort and the difficulty of the preparation, the skipper needs 24 hours to fully recover after each navigation.

Skipper Nicolas Troussel tells us:

“I have worked my whole life towards this race, it is a dream come true, it is my passion. Every day I am working on it, with the boat, with CORUM. I am very happy to have achieved the qualification that I and my team have been working so hard on for the last months. Now we’re working towards the starting shot for the toughest solo race in the world.”

The IMOCA 60 CORUM L’Épargne

The modifications to the CORUM L’Épargne, an IMOCA 60-foot monohull, are in full swing.  The CORUM L’Épargne is now being prepared at the well-known Mer Agitée shipyard.

The Vendée Globe is sailed in IMOCA Open 60 type boats, also called ‘Open 60’. As the name indicates, these boats are 60 feet long (18.28m). IMOCA’s are made entirely of carbon fibre and equipped with a rotation mast for a better performance of the mainsail and are considered to be the pinnacle in offshore competition sailing in monohulls. Particularly eye-catching are the hydrofoils that lift the boat out of the water for the most part while sailing.
